Most brides tell me that the moment
they put on the wedding dress they ultimately chose for their most
important day, they knew it was “The One.” I often hear that
the mother or friend assisting with this chore cried, and what
could be a better endorsement.
The perfect veil, however, can be another challenge entirely. You
may feel a connection with a certain style that appealed to you
while you searched through all of those bridal magazines, and that
is an excellent beginning; but it’s crucial that the veil
compliment the dress and particularly that it coordinates with the
neckline. It is also important to consider the shape of the face,
the hairstyle and the overall effect when you stand back to
observe yourself in your wedding dress to find a headpiece that
compliments all of these aspects.
A petite bride particularly should scale down so that she feels
that she is wearing this accessory and it is not wearing her.
A beaded comb might be more flattering than a tiara if your
face is elongated. In this case you would not want to select a
headpiece that is pointed. If you are weight conscious, you have
already chosen a dress to slenderize your figure. Layers of tulle
can undo the look you have just created with the dress selection.
If you are having an outdoor
ceremony, it is preferable to wear a veil with some weight, such
as a ribboned edge or crystals which will counteract the breeze.
Tiny weights can also be camouflaged by a ribbon accent.
If your hair is longer, a low
chignon can be accented with pearl headpins, baby roses or
stephanotis which will peak through a simple veil held by a comb
placed just above the bun.
Nothing is as dramatic as a
cathedral or chapel veil for a church wedding when the bride is
wearing a gown with a long train. This extension can be made to be
detachable, leaving a shorter veil in place if you wish to
maintain that bridal identity for the reception.
Many a client has confided to me
that, once the veil was in place, it was the special moment--now
she felt she truly was a bride and never wanted to take the veil
off, it was such a perfect compliment for that special day.
